Tom Bean Middle School Site-Based Decision Making Committee

Minutes for the Meeting on November 6, 2007

Mr. Smith called the meeting to order at 3:39 p.m.

Mrs. Cummings was appointed as time keeper. Mrs. Porter was appointed as scribe.

The following committee members were present and introduced themselves:

Mr. Smith presented the agenda items. The school newsletter was added to the agenda items.

Mr. Smith presented power point highlights of SBDM member responsibilities.

Mr. Smith presented the SBDM TEC checklist and gave an overview of the compliance standards.

The committee discussed Positive Referral forms to recognize positive behavior of students.

There was discussion on what rewards should be given to kids when they are sent to the office for positive referrals. Mrs. Bannister suggested the form should be more “kid friendly”. Ms. Cummings made a motion for Ms. Bruton and Ms. Bannister to revise the sample referral form to be more simplistic and kid friendly. The motion was unanimously seconded.

The TBMS Character Education Overview was discussed. Mr. Smith will send an email to school staff asking for brief overviews to be sent to him of any positive program or activity available to our Middle School students that foster character, good choices, and positive attitudes.  This list will be compiled and distributed to parents of sixth graders each year and to new students. This will help everyone know what opportunities are available other than academics.

The TBMS newsletter was viewed by the committee. There were many positive comments.

The next meeting was set for November 27, 2007, at 3:30 p.m.

The SBDM Committee meeting was adjourned at 4:35 p.m.
