Matthew Boykin 6th and 7th Grade Science Teacher/Coach 903 546-6161 matthew.boykin@tombean-isd.org |
I graduated from Honey Grove High School in 1993, before attending Texas A&M-Commerce. There, I ran track and cross country, while earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biological Sciences. I entered the retail world as a grocery manager and worked up to an assistant store manager before realizing I wanted to get into the educational field. I went back to Commerce and received my teacher’s certificate, as well as completing a Master’s of Education in Elementary Education. I taught at Parkhill Junior High School in Richardson, before being hired at Tom Bean. I began teaching in Tom Bean in 2004. I have been married to my wonderful wife, Heather, since 1998. We have a beautiful, talented daughter named Caroline. We have lived in Sherman since 2007. I believe that all students have the ability to learn. For this to occur, a teacher must do a few things. First, a teacher must make the lesson applicable to the child’s life. If a student can make connections between their life and learning, they will more likely learn and retain the material. Next, a teacher must make the learning fun. If the student is disinterested, they will not learn. The teacher must find the balance between teaching the material and bringing excitement to the lesson. A teacher must provide a safe environment for the student. The student should know that they are safe and will be provided with the best learning environment possible. They need to be able to leave all of their outside troubles at the door and focus solely on learning. Finally, teachers must find which teaching style works best with each student. All students learn differently, and it is up to the teacher to determine how to best meet the student’s needs. |
